A man has been arrested after a two-year old was found unaccompanied in a street in Motherwell.

Police were called to reports of a child “wandering the streets” in the town’s Albion Street at about 20:40 on Sunday.

The child was immediately taken into the care of police. A 49-year-old man was later arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

He was expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police attended the report of a young child wandering the streets in Albion Street, Motherwell.

“On their arrival they came across a two-year-old child who was not in the company of a suitable adult.

“The child was immediately taken into the care of police who liaised with the emergency social work department.”

She added: “Subsequent enquiries were carried out and a local 49-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged offence contrary to the Children and Young Persons Act 2014.”
